Laurie Berkner serves up a heaping helping of
whacked-out, slaphappy lyrics and get-you-moving acoustic guitar
licks. The littlest listeners (Berkner's fan base barely skims
the surface of the six-and-up crowd) will want to slip on their
dancing shoes for such originals as the opening track, "We Are
the Dinosaurs," on which a pack of prehistorics prance around,
stopping only to eat their food when they're in the mood and take
a rest over in their nest. The blues-soaked "I Know a Chicken"
teeters on frenzied, shaky eggs and an over-the-top tempo, and
the sweet, musically simple "123" tickles sentimental sides with
its "koochie-koochie coo / I love you" refrain. Besides her
surefootedness with her own songs, Berkner also nails a number of
traditional tunes here, most notably "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the
ain," "ABCD Medley," on which she artfully melds the ABC
song with "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," "Twinkle, Twinkle Little
Star," and "Wimoweh (The Lion s Tonight)," a gloriously
kiddified rendition of the already infectious original. Overall,
this record reflects Berkner's knack for stacking on the fun.
Best of all, because of its standout instrumentation, parents are
apt to groove along ungrudgingly, thereby setting the stage for a
squabble-free shared musical experience. Whaddaya think of that?

About the Artist
----------------
Laurie Berkner has been working with children since
1992, singing, writing and teaching music, but her recent success
as a children's artist was a surprise to her. "It was
so unexpected," says Laurie. "I'd been performing in rock bands
and struggling to write original music. Writing music for kids
has not been a struggle at all. The more I started working on
material for children, the more I realized that it opened up
creativity in me that I never knew I had."
While Laurie never planned to be a children's performer, looking
back on her career it almost seems inevitable. Music was
certainly in her blood, and working with children was a running
theme. Growing up in New Jersey, Laurie was always involved in
music, whether singing in choirs, playing in bands, or performing
in musical theater. After college, Laurie began working as a
children's music spet at New York area preschool and day
care centers. Working with children became the perfect creative
outlet for Laurie to express her talents and create something
that, she says, "has turned out to be incredibly rewarding."
Laurie Berkner's first release in 1997, 'Whaddaya Think of That?'
(only available on cassette at the time) was inspired by the
parents of her young students. "The children were really
responding to the music we created together," explains Laurie.
Many of the songs, such as 'We Are The Dinosaurs,' involve
movement, and all of them invite children's participation. By the
time she released her second CD in 1998, 'Buzz Buzz,' Laurie had
formed her own record company. Her work began to sell briskly in
New York as word of mouth began to spread and critical accl
began pouring in. Laurie's inventive, playful, and well-crafted
songs, as well as her accomplished guitar playing and engaging
vocals, stood out among other, often over-produced, children's
fare.
By the time Laurie's third release, 'Victor Vito' came out in
late 1999, she had a distribution deal and a fanatic following
among children aged 0-7, including the offspring of celebrities
such as Madonna and Sting (both of whom invited Laurie to perform
at their children's birthday parties). The Children's Music Web
awarded the CD "Best for Toddlers" and "Best Song For
Young Children," and the CD also received a Parent's Guide To
Children's Media Award and a Publisher's Weekly "Listen Up"
Award.
'Whaddaya Think of That?' was remastered and re-released on CD in
2000, and that same year Laurie performed at the White House for
the annual Easter Egg Roll. She made her debut on VHS the
following year, with the release of 'Laurie Berkner's Video
Songbook.' NBC's 'Today Show' previewed the video when Laurie
performed live on the program. The video received a Parent's
Guide To Children's Media Award and a Video Magic Award from
Parenting Magazine.
Laurie Berkner performs across the country with her husband,
bassist Brian Mueller, and keyboardist Susie Lampert (both appear
on all three CDs and video).
